How is the disease diagnosed?

A blood test at any time can detect if you have sickle cell or not; it is better if you get tested early though. Sickle cell can be diagnosed before birth by taking a sample of amniotic fluid or tissue from the placenta. When the child is tested before birth, the test looks for the sickle cell hemoglobin gene.
